About the role

Rio Tinto’s Rail Maintenance Excellence division has a unique opportunity available for a Superintendent Rail Scheduling to join the newly created Maintenance Excellence team.

This role will report to the Manager - Maintenance Excellence and will be based at 7 Mile, Karratha, operating a 5 days on, 2 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off roster.

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to business outcomes by leading the new centralised scheduling team. The Superintendent Scheduling ensures the schedule is integrated, optimised, and ensures a safe execution of work for our teams. The role is also focused on strong collaboration within IOS, RNM, RNR, RL&O and other teams across the business.

It is also envisaged that this role will play a key role in building capability and leading the team through change as Work Management processes improve under the RME Improvement roadmap.

Major accountabilities of this role include;

  • Manage the centralised scheduling team
  • Oversee the day-to-day scheduling and reporting activities of the team
  • Active management of the obstruction approvals coordination with RL&O (Rail Logistics and Optimisation), IOS (Integrated Operations Scheduling) & the Rail Execution teams
  • Provide advice and feedback to schedulers on plan quality and encourage critical thinking/alternative strategies for schedule construction
  • Provide reconciliation for the weekly and monthly performance against plan
  • Assist in the integration of expansion and upgrade projects
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by developing, implementing and supporting optimal production and quality principles
  • Ensure work management deliverables are achieved by the team

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will preferably have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of scheduling/planning processes and systems and/or logistics management or process management in industrial/mining environments
  • Understands whole of business approach to value-chain optimisation.
  • Exposure to the Rail Maintenance ~ desirable
  • Experience in people management & leading teams though change
  • Curiosity and a willingness to learn 
  • Experience in CMMS such as SAP, Microsoft project, HOSDI
  • Ability to collaborate and build trust with a wide range of stakeholders across the business
  • Excellent communication skills – ability to distil complex information into readily understood key messages & to present this to a wide range of audiences
  • Project management exposure
  • Planning & Scheduling position > 5 years
  • Experience in MS Office suite & using data analytics packages e.g. Power BI

Where you will be working

This opportunity will be located at our 7 Mile Operation in Dampier, a coastal town just a short drive from the beautiful coastal town of Karratha, located in the heart of the Pilbara and home to some of WA’s most beautiful beaches.

Our privately owned and operated rail network is an essential part of our integrated production process and services our 15 mines across the Pilbara via 1,700km of track. With depots located at Tom Price, Cape Lambert and Dampier (7 Mile), each train is operated by a single driver and comprises up to three locomotives and 240 ore cars stretching to approximately 2.7 kilometres in length with over 40 trains operating per day. We are also applying and adapting technology to improve safety and productivity across our rail network.
