Within the family of Rio Tinto operations is Oyu Tolgoi. Oyu Tolgoi LLC (OT) operates the Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold mine, which will be one of the world’s largest underground block cave mines. OT is located in the South Gobi region of Mongolia.

OT is a partnership between the Government of Mongolia (34%), Turquoise Hill Resources (66%) and Rio Tinto (approximately 50.8% of Turquoise Hill). Rio Tinto was appointed management controller of OT in December 2010 to deliver this strategically important asset for Mongolia. OT will contribute to Mongolia’s social and economic development.

We are looking for a Superintendent – Scheduling & Systems for Oyu Tolgoi (OT). This role will be Brisbane-based on a lifestyle 5:2 roster. Occasional international travel to Mongolia will be required (~2 trips per year).

We are currently commencing a critical phase of undercutting of our “Super Cave”, so it’s a very exciting time to join the team.

Reporting to the Manager Planning and Scheduling, key duties will include:

  • Leading a small team of mining engineers in the medium to long-term scheduling duties for OT Underground
  • Managing the transition of medium-term planning duties from Brisbane to OT Site throughout 2022
  • Coordinating the scheduling deliverables, including schedules for long-term studies, quarterly LOM updates and budget schedules
  • Presenting schedule deliverables to senior leaders amongst the Rio Tinto, OT and Turquoise Hill businesses
  • Building and fostering strong stakeholder relationships
  • Streamlining the scheduling process to create more capacity within the team
  • Identifying and managing key schedule improvement projects
  • Management of the long-term critical path to key mining milestones and communicating to key stakeholders
  • Management of the mine planning and design systems upgrades, primarily the Deswik Suite (including MDM and File Manager)
  • Overseeing the creation of safe and realistic schedules

What you’ll bring

  • A Mining Engineering degree or equivalent
  • Prior experience leading a high performing technical team
  • Strong and confident communication skills
  • Excellent time management capability
  • Extensive mine design and scheduling experience using the Deswik suite
  • Highly effective communication and stakeholder management skills, including ability to collaborate remotely with global teams
  • Mass mining exposure (highly regarded)

Where you will be workingThis role is based in Brisbane and is supporting the ongoing ramp up of the world’s newest block cave. Oyu Tolgoi LLC, Mongolia’s largest copper and gold mining company, is a strategic partnership between the Government of Mongolia, Turquoise Hill Resources and Rio Tinto. Located in the South Gobi, Oyu Tolgoi commenced shipment of product to customers in July 2013. Oyu Tolgoi is managed by Rio Tinto, which is investing global expertise and cutting-edge technology to help develop Mongolia’s mining industry and ensure Oyu Tolgoi is one of the world’s most advanced mines.
