About the Role

We are looking for a Superintendent Train Control to lead the Train Control team based at our Operation Centre situated on Noongar Country. Responsible for ensuring the safe and productive movement of trains across the world’s first fully autonomous heavy haul railway.

Where you will be working

This role is being offered in Perth based out of our Operations Centre, near the Perth Airport. Our privately owned and operated rail network is an essential part of our integrated production network.

Reporting to the Manager Rail Logistics & Optimisation you will:

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, supporting the team in the implementation of improvement initiatives, competency training and technical advances
  • Focus on improving culture and engagement
  • Collaborate with stakeholders at all levels across Rio Tinto Iron Ore
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and procedures
  • Use data and information to support decision making
  • Support ongoing development of team members
  • Lead safety investigations, manage relevant actions
  • Ensuring teams are competent to safely operate and support our rail operations
  • Managing operating budgets to achieve business outcomes
  • Supporting the critical interface aspects across the rail, mine and port networks

About You

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Experience managing large operational teams
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience in evolving an inclusive and engaged workforce
  • Demonstrated previous operating experience in Rail, Supply Chain & Logistics or bulk materials handling environment
  • Exposure to financial management and operational budgets
  • Incident investigations (e.g. Essential Factors or ICAM) skills

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Tertiary qualification in Logistics and Supply Change Management or a business discipline
  • Business improvement experience
  • Experience in project management
  • Formal frontline leadership qualifications

Where you will be working

Our state-of-the-art Operations Centre (OC) is located near the Perth domestic airport. The control room operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to coordinate our integrated network of mines, rail, power and ports.

We operate 200 locomotives on more than 1,700 kilometres of track in the Pilbara, transporting ore from 16 mines to four port terminals. The average return distance of these trains is about 800 kilometres with the average journey cycle, including loading and dumping, taking approximately 40 hours

Our network is the largest privately owned and operated heavy haul rail system in Australia, and as we focus on the future, our vision is to become the greatest heavy haul railway in the world
