We are looking for aWater and Environment Superintendent to oversee planning and project execution of Energy Resources of Australia Ltd’s (ERA) water management and environment programmes. 

The role requires continuous fostering of working relationships with numerous stakeholders, including those acting on behalf of traditional owners and the Commonwealth government. A subject matter expert-level of knowledge is required to support ERA in the creation and execution of the Ranger Water Management Plan, in addition toa number of environmental management plans and standards. The role will also partner with external consultants and contractors, to support the delivery of Closure-related services and projects, to anenvironmental standard commensurate of the pristine landscapes which surround the RangerClosure Project.

Due to the extensive degree of environmental regulation, the Water & Environment Superintendent is heavily focused in ensuring the execution of Closure andRehabilitation activities are performed in-line with the environmental requirements of ERA’s Ranger Authorisation. 

This role is a great opportunity to take the lead on the land and water management strategy, on a world class rehabilitation project, set in one of the mostculturally and environmentally significant locations in Australia. 

Reporting to ERA’s Health, Safety & Environment Manager, you will be:

  • Proactively working on technical problems, of high consequence and complexity, where evaluation of contributing factors requires the analysis of multiple data inputs
  • Seeking out all available internal and externalresources, to make sound risk-based and scientifically-defensible decisions, and relaying this advice along with known uncertainties to senior business leaders
  • Preparation and peer-review ofwater and environmental reports, including the development of scientific writing skills of the team’s technical professionals
  • Flagging potential conflicts and flaws in Closure Execution plans, through the participation in project-level risk assessments, andmitigating concern through the nomination of effective controls or adaptive management plans
  • Development of annual departmental budgets, and contributing to the financial forecasting of ERA’s Ranger Closure Project
  • Overseeing a team of experts in land and water stewardship, including the management of air, surface water and groundwater, waste and weed outcomes for the business
  • Recruit, train, mentor and develop high performing technical and trade professionals
  • Developing and implementing key continuousimprovements ,to drive optimized water and environmental management 
  • Championing of our Rio Tinto Health, Safety and Environment standards and policies, ensuring regulatory standards are met

What you will bring

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • BSc or BEng, majoring in Environmental Science, Hydrogeology or other geosciences
  • Senior-level experience in water and environmental management within the mining sector, heavy industry or equivalent sectors
  • A high level of communication and inter-personal skills, including the ability to deliver decipherable technical presentations to senior business leaders, key regulators and statutory authorities, and other technical and non-technical groups
  • Knowledge of Commonwealth and Northern Territory environmental legislation

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Leadership and management experience, of various internal and external stakeholders, in a complex work environment.
  • Strong understanding of standards, policies and strategies as they relate to water and environmental management.

Where you will be working 

Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) is a publicly listed company with Rio Tinto its major shareholder. ERA has mined and produced uranium oxide from its Ranger mine in the beautiful and rugged Alligator Rivers area of the Northern Territory since 1980. The Ranger mine is located on Aboriginal land, and is surrounded by, but separate from Kakadu National Park.

Mining at Ranger ceased in November 2012 and since then, Ranger has been processing ore from stockpiles.

The role is either Darwin based on a Bus in Bus out arrangement between Ranger Mine and Darwin, or locally based residential in Jabiru. Subsidised housing arrangements for Jabiru residents will be included.
