About the Role

The Supervisor Training role has been established within the OS Training Team to provide site-based coordination of the technical training function. The main focus of this role is to ensure training & assessment activity is undertaken in a timely and high quality manner. This site-based role is critical in ensuring our frontline are work-ready and that availability of people and equipment is not compromised due to training gaps.

The Training Supervisor role is a full-time position and the scope of the role will be across several deployments. Rosters for this role will provide for good coverage across the crews and deployments you will need to manage. 

Key focus areas for this role include preparing for new deployments; implementing standardised training & assessment processes; forward planning/forecasting of training & assessment work; undertaking quality checks of training & assessment work (i.e. validation and moderation); troubleshooting competency queries; facilitating handovers and ensuring continuity of support to deployment line leads; supporting mastery implementation.

Accountabilities include:  

  • Team Management – Oversee Trainers/Assessors for your allocated deployments, supporting work planning, shift changeover and providing guidance, support and troubleshooting of local issues. This role will be a central conduit between the corporate offices and site.
  • High Quality Focus – Monitor quality of training & assessment activity, ensuring alignment to site-based Safety & Health Management Systems and Training Schemes, as well as BHP requirements and the broader Vocational Education & Training sector. Quality reviews and audit activity with the assistance of Site Systems Administrators, will be a focus to identify opportunities for standardising & improving training & assessment processes for OS.
  • Project Focus – Assist the Technical Capability Leads with continuous improvement projects and implementation of specialised industry and BHP-specific training packages within the required timeframes.
  • Networking/Collaboration Focus – Network with key internal stakeholders such as operational line leads (i.e. Supervisors, Line Engineers, and Technical Specialists) and other internal teams (i.e. OS Mastery Team) and other specialised groups who may also be  working at the same sites.

About You

It is preferable that you will have:  

  • Current qualification or skill sets in Training & Assessment.Significant Training & Assessment experience in a similar role within mining or heavy industry.
  • Experience managing teams and conflicting priorities, including the capacity to balance day to day workloads alongside project work.
  • Experience planning training & assessment activity across multiple scopes to ensure frontline work-readiness is not compromised.
  • A continuous improvement focus that identifies opportunities for refining processes at site-level and minimizing pain points for the frontline.
  • Understanding of legislative requirements that impact OS deployments.
  • High level interpersonal skills and the ability to build highly effective working relationships across a range of team members, stakeholders and working groups.
  • Authentically engaging stakeholders to understand & meet their training & competency requirements, as well as troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
  • Show initiative and work with minimal direction, being resourceful and proactive in your approach.
  • Willingness to lead and implement change, as well as influence and mentor others in training and safety principles and behaviours.
  • Proven commitment to look after your own wellbeing and the confidence to speak up when others put themselves in harm’s way.
  • Your background in either a similar type of position or environment will see you well placed with the required capability to step into this opportunity. Your ability to plan work, coordinate teams and trouble-shoot problems across varied locations is of the upmost importance, as well as a focus on quality of training/assessment activity and an understanding of how critical training is to safe and efficient operations. It is essential that you are forward thinking, highly collaborative and work with a one-team approach.
