About the Role
The main function of the Tailings Dam Engineer will be to complete all statutory requirements of the license to operate as well as supervise the continuous works on the Mount Keith Central Discharge tailings dam. The role will be responsible for managing the permanent contract team working on the dam as well as being accountable for the QA/QC of all aspects of work on the dam.
All budgeting and cost control for tailings works and associated infrastructure will also fall within the accountability of this role. All statutory reports and audits will either be completed by you, or facilitated and proofed if completed by an external resource. As such you will also be the primary interface for engineering consultants.
The role will also encompass project management of any works associated with maintaining or upgrading the dam. Reporting to the Processing Manager and work closely with the Superintendent Production Execution within the processing team, the role will provide opportunities to use execution and project skills carrying out civil works designs and project managing some of this work support strongly by technical experts in the Governance and Technical Stewardship team and external Engineer of Record consultant. You may also be required to assist in a technical capacity on other projects in the northern region operations of Nickel West.
The Mount Keith Tailings Facility is currently at the centre of a pioneering, world-first project in engineered mineralisation for atmospheric carbon removal. BHP has partnered with a company to form a powerful combination of world-leading science and innovation to store carbon dioxide safely and permanently in our mine tailings.The role offers a first hand opportunity to be part of the this exciting work.
About You
You will have a degree in either Civil or Geomechanical Engineering with a sound basis in earthworks construction and the methods and systems required to ensure these works have been completed to set standards.
Candidates will benefit from being able to demonstrate:
- High level of safety focus – on keeping themselves safe and working safely in a team
- Currently working in an operating environment and ability to work independently
- Strong understanding of soil structural characteristics and methods of testing compaction and consolidation.
- Able to work unsupervised and handle diverse tasks in an effective manner
- Some level of competency in CAD systems and interpretation of survey results.
- Strong communication skills.

Location
Nickel West Mt Keith is located 460 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie in the Northern Goldfields. Nickel West Mt Keith is a surface mining operation with an open pit and concentrator plant. The operation is surrounded by pastoral stations, with the nearest townships being Leinster and Wiluna.
The operational tailings facility at Mount Keith is a very large central discharge facility with continuous raising of the external wall. The dam has been in operation for over 20 years and has some unique characteristics which will add interest and challenges to the role of dam engineer.
There’s plenty to keep you entertained in the Mt Keith Village. Take the heat off the day and head to the pool – or join in a game of footy. BBQ dinners are regularly held and other social activities include movie nights. Employees commute to and from Perth on a fly in / fly out roster.
