We are looking for a Technical Officer – HEQ Maintenance to assist the HEQ Maintenance team extract maximum value from the HEQ fleet through cost base reduction projects and ongoing maintenance improvement initiatives.Rio Tinto Weipa is located 900km north-west of Cairns on the Gulf of Carpentaria and has been operating for over 50 years. Over the years, it has developed into a vibrant and diverse cultural hub of the Western Cape. Weipa offers a coastal community rich in geographical beauty and cultural heritage that provides families with opportunities to participate in leisure activities, sports and community events. With a strong sense of community, the region has plenty of natural beauty to offer including the opportunities for boating, fishing, camping and exploring.
The Amrun Mine Site is located 40 kilometers south west of Weipa with a life expectancy of 40 plus years to expand our bauxite operations and continue production from one of the world’s premier bauxite deposits. This expansion will strengthen the economy and provide exciting opportunities for the people of Cape York and Queensland for future generations.
This is a great opportunity for a highly motivated individual. Working a 9-day fortnight roster at Amrun and reporting directly to the Superintendent HEQ Maintenance, you will be:
- Providing a high level of maintenance and technical support to the Amrun Heavy Equipment Maintenance team, recognizing technical gaps within teams and providing technical guidance on a range of subjects
- Supporting the delivery and ownership of the Defect Elimination process for HME.
- Reviewing data integrity for HME downtime and translation of Wenco and SAP
- Leading the RCA processes to ensure component failures are investigated and mitigating or eliminating strategies are implemented
- Assisting with the development of operating and maintenance strategies to maximize availability of equipment with intent to deliver operational targets.
- Driving continuous improvement with regards to overall HME performance
What you will bring
- Trade qualification in Mobile Earthmoving Equipment Maintenance with demonstrated experience within HEQ mining maintenance operations
- Previous experience in leading or participating in failure analysis work
- Intermediate to Advanced proficiency in MS Office
- Sound written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to schedule and execute work as planned
It will also be beneficial if you have:
- Experience with SAP maintenance systems
- An understanding of lean and Six sigma principles
- A background in HME improvement projects or similar

Where you will be working
Our Weipa Operations includes three bauxite mines, processing facilities, ship loaders, an export wharf, two ports, power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals. Located on the Western Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, each year the operation produces more than 35 million tonnes of bauxite.
Our operations are supported by a 1,900-strong workforce—including 26 per cent who are women and 25 per cent Indigenous employees. Activities include mine operations, maintenance, asset management, ports, cultural heritage management, and processing facility management.
The development of our new mine, Amrun, which was completed in 2018, will extend the life of our Weipa bauxite operations by decades to come and significantly build on our 55-year history on the Western Cape.
