Learning and development is to be an effective and accessible lever to mitigate risk and build capability to meet the needs of the business. This is underpinned by the injection of innovation, optimisation and data driven decision making.

Learning and Development are accountable for the complete learning cycle including; identification of learning needs, design and development of learning content, scheduling for learning completion, delivery of learning, recording of learning completion and measurement of learning effectiveness against defined criteria.

We are currently seeking multiple Trainers to join Rio Tinto Aluminium’s (RTA) Pacific Operations. Opportunities are available across Rio Tinto Aluminiums’ Pacific Operations sites including Bell Bay Aluminium (Tasmania), New Zealand’s Aluminium Smelter (Invercargill), Weipa (Far North Queensland), Gove (Northern Territory), Yarwun and Boyne Smelter Limited (Gladstone).

These roles are a great opportunity for an experienced Learning and Development professional, who has a thirst for pushing the boundaries on what is believed to be possible as well as a belief that Learning and Development is a lever for business success.

Reporting to the site Superintendent Learning and Development you will be involved in the execution of classroom and specialised learning requirements to learners. You will coach and support those conducting workplace field training in the methods required for in field delivery of learning and assessments as per the endorsed methods, processes, and systems. Validation, that assessment process has been conducted to mitigate risk and discharge legal obligation. You will:

• Deliver formal face to face classroom and specialised learning content
• Provide training, guidance and support to new employees ensuring they obtain the required knowledge to be safe and competent to complete required tasks within established timeframes
• Delivers training necessary to develop employee capability; carrying out practical assessments and maintaining relevant documentation and record keeping
• Monitoring and reporting of trainee performance
• Conducts regular reviews of training to identify opportunities to improve quality, reduce cost and improve production, quality and safety
• Undertakes administrative duties related to delivery of training
• Be accountable for quality assurance assessment of competency evidence
• Respond to customer queries including system access assistance
• Partner with wider L&D team to development and review learning content
• Where Trainers are delivering specialised learning through an RTO, ensure ongoing currency for required qualifications

About You

• Demonstrated commitment to the safety of yourself and others
• Certificate IV Training and Assessment
• High Risk Work Licence including CB Gantry Crane (preferred for Smelter Sites)
• Strong facilitation skills including how to engage, story tell and bring people on the learning journey
• Interpersonal skills to communicate efficiently and effectively with learners
• High level of attention to detail to confirm transfer of knowledge
• Professional management of stakeholders
• Proficient in Microsoft 365 suite
• Experience in facilitation of learning content
• Experience working in a large integrated organisation
• Strong stakeholder engagement with finely tuned administration skills capable of developing and running reports
• Ability to learn new systems

Where you’ll be working Rio Tinto Aluminium – Pacific Operations

Weipa

Weipa is a coastal mining town in the local government area of Weipa Town in Queensland. It is the largest town on the Cape York Peninsula. It exists because of the enormous bauxite deposits along the coast. Our Weipa operations in Far North Queensland includes three bauxite mines, processing facilities, ship loaders, an export wharf, two ports power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals.

Bell Bay Aluminium

Bell Bay, Northern Tasmania, is situated on the mouth of the Tamar River, approximately five kilometres from George Town and 45 kilometres from Launceston. Bell Bay Aluminium has a long and proud history of supporting the Tasmanian community. Our initiatives in education, environment, health and wellbeing, arts and diversity are designed to make a positive difference and create quality outcomes.

Yarwun Refinery

Located in Gladstone, Queensland, the region is famous for fishing and boating. With Australia's most northerly surf beach, Agnes Water and Town of 1770, proximity to National Parks, laid back coastal villages and rural hinterland lifestyles, make it an attractive destination to live and work. The Yarwun refinery provides test platforms for our bauxite technologies globally, which helps market our northern Australian bauxite all around the world.

Boyne Smelters Limited (BSL)

Boyne Smelters Limited is Australia’s second largest aluminium smelter with a 1,000-person strong workforce. Located approximately 20km south east of Gladstone at Boyne Island on the Central Queensland coast, BSL produces around 500,000 tonnes of aluminium per annum. Activities at BSL include manufacturing carbon anodes in the carbon plant, aluminium production (smelting) in reduction lines, and casting of molten material into aluminium products ready to ship. The smelter is connected via a conveyor belt to the Queensland Alumina Limited refinery for the supply of alumina.

Gove

Our Gove site in Australia’s Northern Territory has been supplying the global aluminium industry with world-class bauxite for more than 40 years. Gove bauxite is shipped internationally as well as domestically to supply Queensland Alumina Limited and Yarwun refineries in Gladstone, Queensland. These refineries produce alumina as feedstock for our Australian aluminium smelting operations and for sale on the international market. We expect our bauxite mining operations in the Gove Peninsula will cease later this decade and we are doing significant work to support closure of the operation.
