About the Role - Job Description

The External Affairs Strategy & Planning team works to establish, embed and continuously improve the long-term integrated strategy of the External Affairs function, as well as associated programs of work. Members of our team have a unique and unparalleled opportunity to work globally across all External Affairs sub-functions (Legal, Global Corporate Affairs, Group Governance, Compliance, Ethics & Investigations, Corporate Communications and Sustainability & Climate Change).

Reporting to the Chief Legal, Governance & External Affairs Officer, the Vice President Strategy & Planning will drive function-wide strategy and innovation, as well as undertaking global programs that enhance the culture, capability, effectiveness and efficiency of External Affairs.  A key member of the External Affairs Leadership Team, they will lead a geographically dispersed team with diverse functional experience, skillsets and journeys.

This is a global search; with the role to be based in Melbourne, Australia. 

About You - Skills and Qualifications

To be successful in this role you will have significant experience within or adjacent to the External Affairs space, preferably in a large multi-national corporate environment.  . You will be a self-starter with strong communication skills and a track record of providing quality information and advice to senior stakeholders.  You will have an ability to convey business information in a comprehensive and succinct fashion in a dynamic environment.

A commercially orientated professional with significant experience across global markets, will be complemented by excellent people skills, engagement and communication, high energy levels, and an action oriented attitude tempered by simplicity. An overriding commitment to health, safety, environment and sustainable development is key to strategic alignment and success at BHP.

Requirements

Minimum requirements that this candidate will bring are:

  • Tertiary qualification (Bachelor’s degree) in Business or Science related field is required; advanced degree preferred
  • Extensive experience working in a large multi-national organisation or management consulting firm across cultures and regions of the world
  • Experience in planning and managing programs and projects, with a mastery in engaging and influencing at the most senior levels of the business and with external stakeholder to drive and lead change; proven track record of providing quality information and advice to senior management
  • Demonstrated experience in developing strategies and driving organisational innovation and embedding new ways of working. Experience in Lean / continuous improvement coaching will be beneficial
  • An aptitude for analysing and synthesising complex information to derive quality insights, and communicating these insights in a compelling manner
  • Demonstrated success operating in multidisciplinary global teams.
  • Demonstrated confidence in Safety Leadership and holding yourself and others accountable
  • A track record of building an inclusive, high-performing culture across multiple locations and disciplines to deliver creative outcomes; including third-party vendors

Accountabilities

Your accountabilities will include, and not be limited to:

  • Lead the design and embedment of an integrated External Affairs strategy; and manage function-wide performance reporting to articulate and quantify the value proposition of External Affairs
  • Work with EA Asset based leadership to understand sub-function priorities and delivers an integrated assessment for input into the EA Wide Strategy & 5 Year Plan
  • Undertake research to identify best practice and innovation trends for External Affairs globally and lead the the implementation of innovative best practices across External Affairs
  • Lead the embedment of new ways of working (e.g. BOS/ Agile) across External Affairs, including the provision of tools, coaching and capability uplift to align with future trends and strategic goals, with an acute focus on continuous improvement
  • Undertake the design and delivery of function-wide programs and initiatives that deliver improvements to the culture, capability, effectiveness and efficiency of External Affairs (including the effective change management of these); driving integration across the sub-functions globally to fully realise the synergies and value proposition of External Affairs
  • Set and drive governance and control frameworks to ensure the integrity of the EA mandate processes and systems and support in the Three Lines Model as part of the Risk Framework.
  • Maintain a strong financial discipline across External Affairs, through robust analysis, monitoring and capability uplift, including EA’s interface with technology, overseeing all technology requests for change across EA
  • Cultivate a wide network of impact (internal & external stakeholders) integrating functions, operations and regions to solve complex challenges to drive strong functional/asset integration
