About the Role

BHP owns, operates and maintains a significant amount of raw and potable water infrastructure. This includes the Newman Water Treatment Plant as well as a significant quantity of RO based potable infrastructure to service FIFO villages and mine operations. This infrastructure is growing and changing with our business. 

The Water Operations Specialist is a key role to facilitate the ongoing operational efficiency of the potable water team by ensuring that all operational regulatory compliance and asset performance requirements are achieved and align to the scheme strategic asset management plan and regulations. The role also mainly focuses on initiating, managing and completing both small- and large-scale improvement projects with the site-based teams. 

Reporting to the Superintendent Water Eastern, some of your duties will include:

  • Confirming water operating plans are available, understood and followed by operations staff
  • Reviewing operational performance data i.e. water quality and quantity, plant performance etc. 
  • Reporting on water quality and quantity events and hazards 
  • Initiating, managing and completing improvement projects with the site teams
  • Ensuring all operational tactical and emergency response plans are reviewed and updated including site-based evacuation plans and dangerous goods management 
  • Confirming all operational critical control points align with the scheme’s drinking water quality management plan
  • Liaising with internal engineering teams on improvement projects and other queries 
  • Liaising with the Operation Technical and Compliance team on operational performance, raw water schemes, license requirements etc. 
  • Liaising with the control systems teams to optimise/improve plant logic etc. 
  • Completing Critical Control Verifications and other critical work in 1SAP
  • Attending/conducting site-based risk assessments 
  • Managing the Weekly Operations meeting and MS Teams page 
  • Working with site-based systems such as SCADA, Pi Vision, KaiNexus, SPO, MOC, Fiori, Pi Data Link, ChemAlert etc.   

About You

To be successful for this role, you will possess the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field: Chemical/Process or Mechanical or equivalent bachelor’s degree in science: chemistry or relevant trade with water industry experience
  • Working knowledge of ADWG (Australian Drinking Water Guidelines), ANCOLD, Water Scheme Operating Plans, Water Management Plans and Source Protection Plans
  • Sound understanding of the water utilities regulatory environment and requirements (DOH, DOW, DER)
  • Experience with coordinating and working with external regulators and internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience with water treatment plant processes, treatment technologies and optimization
  • Ability to work collaboratively with trade maintenance teams and coach where required
  • Ability to manage improvement projects 
  • Experience with document/procedure writing
  • Experience in risk assessment and management 
  • Strong focus on safety (specifically chemical safety)
  • Experience with wastewater desirable
