Rothsay Gold Mine is a high-grade, narrow vein, underground gold mine located approximately 300 km north-northeast of Perth and 85km southeast of Vault Minerals’ Deflector Operations. Rothsay commenced underground mining in late 2020 and comprises two declines, with ore being mined via long-hole stoping methods using custom-made small-scale equipment.
Reporting to the Senior Mining Engineer, the Mining Engineer is to provide support for the Underground Manager in day-to-day production activities and contractor management to ensure that the operation adheres to its scheduling commitments on a weekly timeframe. The Mining engineer is accountable for safe and cost-effective designs that enable the continuity of ore from the underground mine and daily mining operations. As required, the Mining Engineer will fill the statutory position of ventilation officer on behalf of the employer and perform its duties in accordance to Schedule 26 c.11 of the WA Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022.
This position is offered on an 8:6 roster and is available as either a FIFO role from Jandakot or DIDO opportunity from Geraldton and surrounding areas.
Key responsibilities of this role will include:
- Work to, review and provide feedback on standard processes for production and ventilation functions to ensure the mine is operating safely, efficiently and consistently across crews.
- Ensure accurate production reconciliations are completed, summary reports prepared, and any production improvements are promptly evaluated, and applicable changes implemented.
- Effectively manage change through documented change management processes.
- Regularly challenge, review and optimise mine production and ventilation systems, in consultation with the UGM and Alt UGM.
- Ensure all requirements acting as the Underground Ventilation Officer are dutifully undertaken.
- Assist with end of month data collection and reconciliation processes.
- Monitor mining contractor performance in line with the contract, mine plan and approved practices and procedures to ensure safe and cost-effective operation.
- Provide regular updates on the status of production and ventilation priorities such that any change or additional requirements may be built into the mine plan.
- Effectively communicate any operational requirements or changes to production and ventilation which may affect other business functions e.g., changing drill density, changing explosives product, additional ventilation requirements, changes to re-entry periods etc.
- Monitor mining plan performance and manage expectations to achieve weekly agreed targets for mine development and production.
- Understand mining costs by maintaining an accurate daily accrual of mining contractor claimed activity and communicating regularly to key stakeholders.
About You
- Bachelor of Mining Engineering qualification with previous underground mining experience, including narrow vein operations, supported by practical exposure to underground environments and proficiency in drill and blast design, explosive selection, application, and compliance requirements.
- Demonstrated understanding of underground mining functions, development and production mining cycles, mine ventilation systems (primary and secondary), relevant statutory requirements, and operational practices applicable to narrow vein underground gold mining, including associated risks and limitations.
- Basic understanding of mine surveying, mine geology, and underground geotechnical functions, including their operational requirements and application within an underground mining environment.
- Working knowledge and understanding of the WA Work Health & Safety Act (2020) and Work Health & Safety (Mines) Regulations (2022).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, complemented by excellent analytical abilities and a keen attention to detail.
- Strong ability to meet deadlines with effective time management.
- Proficient use and application of MS Office suite, and relevant mining software (Deswik Suite and Ventsim).
- Hold or be able to attain the WA WHS (Mines) Regulations 2022 Underground Ventilation Officer certificate.
- Hold a current WA Driver’s License (manual C Class).
